Another Champions League must win game turned from being a match we were all dreading to see to something that may excite the loyal Gooner.
The news of Yaya Sanogo starting up front shook the Twitter world and as i checked my time line there were #WengerOut tweets everywhere. Looks like this sunk us all. Podolski who has not had a lot of game time was on the bench again. A world cup winner with 121 appearances for Germany was left out over a French under 21 "rookie". Also on the bench was Joel Campbell. Another player reported not to be to happy with his spectator role at the club. He shone in the world cup and with his performance in that tournament and his work permit finally coming through a bright future beckoned for the Costa Rica hot shot. I personally rate the player highly but can see him following the same path as Podolski and not being given a chance to shine in the way we all know he can.
So before kick off Mr Wenger has upset a few people by picking the "post man" in front of 2 international players. Angry, nervous and dreading the worse were a few emotions i felt but Arsene being Arsene you never quite know.
Sanogo Celebrating his first UCL Goal. |
As much as some people despise him le' Professor called it right. 72 Seconds in and after good hold up play the post man put away his first Champions league goal giving arsenal a 1-0 cushion in under 2 minutes. Some times i think you just need to trust him.
The whole performance looked very promising. Defended well and with the magic of the Alexis Sanchez a 2 - 0 win against Dortmund is a very good result and much needed after a disasterious couple of weeks. The Anderlecht match was one half of absolute class and the second half was woeful. Watching a team fall apart in 45 minutes. The man united match was exactly the same, the first 25 minutes Arsenal was running the show and then again they fell apart. Hopefully this will push on with a good run of form.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who made his 100th appearance for Arsenal is currently playing out of skin. Hitting the cross bar last night must have been gutting as his looping shot rooted Weidenfeller as he watched the ball clatter his cross bar. The play between Chamberlain and Chambers on the right was another highlight of a strong 90 minutes. Very intriquite play and when Santi Cazorla join in with the pair its mesmerising. Quick feet, a lot of movement and twisting players in and out.
Seeing the whole team running back and defending, protecting the defence and squeezing out every attack shows that Arsenal are finally coming up with a system to defend better. It has always been our biggest problem. Goals will always come in a game but keeping them out of your own net is something that a good team should be able to do. You cannot lose games if you do not concede.
I am not going to write about Sanchez because there is nothing i can say that you already know. He is a fantastic signing.
I think one player going completely unoticed is is Gibbs. I have always rated the guy and he has saved Arsenal way too many times for us to sit comfortably without him. Not slating Monreal but Gibbs is and has to stay as our first choice left back. How he has not featured more for England is beyond me. I think he is several steps ahead of Shaw at the moment. He has the pace to track back but when he goes forward his link up play is getting much better.
Our next fixture is West Brom away Saturday lunchtime and if we continue to defend the way we did last night i think we should have a comfortable win. As for the "Wenger out" brigade i am hoping they will soon fizzle out with a decent run of good results.
Enjoy the remainder of the week and UP THE GUNNERS!!!
